Mithila's Janakpur

Mithila, the birth place of Hindu goddess, Sita and the great medieval poet Vidyapati, was part of the ancient kingdom of Videha during the later Vedic age. Tirabhikti was another name from Mithila, which was first to make contact with oriental cultures, and consequently strengthened its own.

Lumbini - Birthplace of Gautam Buddha

Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini, in southwestern Nepal, nearly twenty-five hundred years ago. Since then, the city has always remained the focal point of Buddhism. Today's Lumbini is a small sleepy town in the southwestern Tarai plains of Nepal, where the ruins of the old city can still be seen. The followers of both Hinyana and Mahayana sects of Buddhism revere Lumbini. The restored garden and surroundings of Lumbini have the remains of many of the ancient Stupas and monasteries. A large stone pillar that is said to be erected by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in 250 BC bears an inscription about the birth of the Buddha.

Enlightment at Pashupatinath

It was to be, unknown to us, the final week of peaceful shopping in Kathmandu. My bargaining style is simple. I offer 40% of what the vendor demands and not a rupee more. More often than not (in the slow season), I get it. "A few extra dollars spent means a lot to the vendor; little to the tourist." I don't think so! Not when I'm initially quoted a price five times more than the item is worth.

Buddhist circuit boosts regional tourism in SAARC countries

'The footsteps of Lord Buddha', a regional Buddhist circuit, which links the Nepalese Buddhist sites with Indian, Bangladeshi, Bhutanese and Sri Lankan locations is expected to boost regional tourism in SASEC countries.

Five SAARC countries will finance the project and Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing the loan and technical aid for handling the project.

Pashupatinath Temple- The Holiest Place in Nepal

Pashupatinath temple is a Hindu temple located on the shore of the Bagmati river on the eastern part of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

It is regarded as the most sacred temple of Shiva (Pashupati) in Nepal. "Shivaratri" or night of lord Shiva is the most important festival celebrated in this temple. Along the shores of the Bagmati river near the temple lies "Arya Ghat", the most widely used place of cremation for the deceased in Nepal, especially in and around the Kathmandu valley. There is also a large market in the streets surrounding the temple. Vendors sell souvenirs to tourists, but also cloth, dyes, and religious supplies. Believers of the faith Hinduism are allowed to enter the temple. Non-Hindu visitors are allowed to have a look at the temple from the other bank of Bagmati river.
